1. 2013 Paterson Fiction Prize

The Paterson Fiction Prize provides a $1000 award for a novel or collection of short fiction published in 2012. Deadline is April 1, 2013


2. Saturnalia Books Poetry Prize

A prize of $2000 and publication by Saturnalia Books will be given to one poetry book. Entry fee is $30 and the contest ends on April 1, 2013.


3. Bellingham Review Writing Contests

Three prizes of $1,000 each and publication in Bellingham Review is given annually for works of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Submission fee is $20 and contest deadline was extended to April 15, 2013


Calls for Submissions

1. Drafthorse

Drafthorse Literary Journal is seeking submissions for its Summer 2013  issue. Drafthorse is a biannual online publication of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, visual narrative, and other media art where work, occupation, labor—or lack of the same—is in some way intrinsic to a narrative’s potential for epiphany. They are interested in how work (or the absence of it) affects people and communities on an intimate level. While they’re open to various interpretations, they expect the subject to be fundamental to your submission in some way. Deadline for the summer issue is April 30, 2013.


2. The Journal

The Journal is interested in quality fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and reviews of new books of poetry and prose. There are no restrictions on category or type of submission for fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. They are happy to consider long stories and self-contained excerpts of novels.


3. Shadow Road Quarterly

Currently accepting original fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. Deadline for the summer issue is May 15, 2013.

   Hello all! No time for an intro. Here are the opportunities for this week. Keep your heads up and have a great week.


1. The Zócalo Public Square Poetry Prize

The Zócalo Public Square Poetry Prize is awarded annually to the U.S. poet whose poem best evokes a connection to place. The winning poet will receive $500.00. No Entry Fee! Deadline is March 15, 2013.

2. Pressgang Prize

Pressgang, the small press affiliate of the writing program at Butler University, is looking for a book-length collection of prose (stories or essays). Prize is $1200, publication and a reading at Butler. Entry fee is $25 and the contest ends on June 1, 2013.

3. Ploughshares Emerging Writer's Contest

Open to previously unpublished writers. Categories are fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Fiction or non-fiction under 6,000 words and between 3-5 pages of poetry accepted. Prizes: $1,000 and publication in the Winter 2013-14 issue of Ploughshares for the winner of each category. Entry Fee is $24, which  includes a year's subscription to Ploughshares. Current subscribers may submit for free. Contest closes on April 2, 2013.

1. Zingara Poetry Picks

Zingara Poetry Picks, a weekly feature of the blog, Zinagarapoet.net, which has a loyal following and reaches a broad range of readers, is seeking submissions of previously unpublished poems (on-line or in print) for the website. Poems should be no longer than 40 lines, including stanza breaks. Check the website for monthly themes.

2. The Atlas Review

The Atlas Review accepts anonymous submissions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and visual art. Submission period ends May 15, 2013.

3. StorySouth

StorySouth is now accepting unsolicited submissions of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. The submission period will end on June 15, 2013.

   Hello all! I have been MIA. Unfortunately, I had a death in the family and needed some time away to handle it. Thank you all for being patient. I'm still in the process of moving, so my introductions won't be as long during the coming weeks. But, I hope you all have been writing and submitting. Life is crazy so don't put off for tomorrow what you can get done today. Keep pushing.


1. The Southeast Review's 2013 Short Short, Poetry, and Non-fiction Contests

SER invites you to apply to one or more of our three contest categories: World's Best Short-Short Story, Gearhart Poetry, and Narrative Non-fiction. One winner will be chosen in each category and awarded $500. For short story and poetry, the winner and nine finalists will be published in spring/summer 2014. For non-fiction, the winning essay and two finalists will be published in spring/summer 2014. Entry fee is $16 and the contest deadline is March 15, 2013.


2. Vern Cowles Prize for Trinity of Poems

They're searching for the best three contemporary poems. The prize is $1,000 and featured publication in The Cape Rock. Entry fee is $20 and the contest ends on April 1, 2013


3. A Very Short Story Contest

Gotham Writers Workshop would like to make a bet with you. Write a great short story in ten words or fewer. (You may use a title, but that goes into the word count.) Submit it to their contest. Entry is free. Winner of the bet gets a free Gotham ten-week workshop.


4. Steam eReads Romantic Fiction Contest

In celebration of our launch and all things romance, Steam eReads is calling for entries to the 2013 “Some Like it Hot” Romantic Fiction Competition. They are looking for original, previously unpublished works of 50,000+ words. Entry is free, and open to Australian and international writers aged 18 and over. PRIZES: Three cash prizes and a publishing contract with Steam eReads. First prize: $1,500 AUD; Second prize: $1,000 AUD; Third prize: $500 AUD.

1. Ontologica

Ontologica, a Bi-annual literary magazine of art and thought, is now accepting submissions of Non-Fiction, Fiction, and Art. Submission period ends April 30, 2013.


2. Mason's Road Online Literary Journal

They are now accepting your best fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, and craft essays. Issue Seven's theme is Point of View, and they are looking for unique and arresting takes on this topic. Submission period ends April 1, 2013.


3. TINGE Magazine

TINGE Magazine, Temple University's online literary journal, is accepting submissions of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction for its Spring issue, which will be published in April. Deadline for the Spring issue is March 15, 2013.


4. Little Patuxent Review

Announcing Little Patuxent Review's Summer 2013 issue, MUSIC. They're looking for fiction, non-fiction, poetry and art. The Summer reading period ends March 15, 2013


5. Conte 

The editors of Conte, an online journal of narrative writing, announce an open submissions call for poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction for their nineteenth issue, slated for publication in Summer 2013.  Submission period deadline is July 1, 2013.

   Hello all! After all the difficulties we faced in our personal lives, it's finally here! The Winter 2013 Issue of Black Fox Literary Magazine. We must first apologize for the delay and second, thank everyone for their patience. 

   Be on the lookout for our contest announcement, coming soon! There are also a few things that we are especially seeking: Non-fiction, art and photography. We would also love any articles on the craft of writing and publishing.
