Song of the Day: Live Like a Warrior by Matisyahu

Hello all! How was the weekend? I got some reading done and I admit my reading game has been slipping. It feels like I haven't finished a book in weeks! If you're a writer, you know that can seem like an eternity. I have been in a bit of a frenzy lately as I've imposed my own deadline for editing my novel. I'm not going to chat much today as I'll need to get back to work. If you get a chance, listen to the song of the day. It's such a great motivational song. Don't forget to challenge yourself and your writing everyday. Submit your work and get it out in the world.

Contests:

1. The Fourth Annual Bartleby Snopes Dialogue Only Writing Contest

A minimum of $290 will be awarded, with at least $250 going to first place and at least $10 to the four honorable mentions. The five finalists will also appear in Issue 9 of the magazine due out in January 2013. For every entry over 25, an additional $5 will be awarded to the first place story. Stories should be composed entirely of dialogue. You may use as many characters as you want. Submissions must be under 2000 words. Entry fee is $10 and the contest closes on September 15, 2012.

3. Western Press Books

Western Press Books is now accepting poems, stories, and creative non-fiction for the next anthology in their series, Manifest West. This year they're calling for submissions of literary work based on the theme of the contemporary cowboy (or cowpoke, if one wishes to use the gender-neutral term). This includes but is not limited to the following cowboy/cowpoke variations, breeds, and assorted stereotypes:

  • the modern day working cowboy
  • the rodeo cowboy
  • the urban cowboy
  • the weekend warrior cowboy
  • the arena riding cowboy
  • the investing-in-ranch-land cowboy
  • the wheeler-and-dealer-at-every-auction-sale cowboy
  • the country music star cowboy
  • the I-played-cowboys-and-Indians-as-a-kid cowboy

In addition to focusing on the cowpoke in all their glory, remember that the anthology series features literary writing with a distinct Western regional flavor. Submission deadline is February 20, 2013.

Hi Racquel! Thanks so much for the mention. We really like what you've done for new writers here at this blog as well as at Black Fox Literary Magazine. We're putting together a writers' resource page--mind if we link to your site?
